The Tibet Plateau with its rich natural resources and unique landscape is often referred to as the roof of the world.

     Tourist Attractions: Kumbum monastery, 20 kilometers southwest of Xining
Mountains: Altun and Qilian Mountains in the north; Kunlun, Hoh Xil, and Qimantag in the west Tanggula, where China's longest river, the Yangtze, has its source, in the southwest; A'nyemaqen and Bayan Har in the southeast, with the 5,464-kilometer Yellow River originating from the latter.
Rivers: Yellow River and tributaries; Tuotuo-Tongtian River, which is the upper reach of the Yangtze River; inland intermittent rivers in the basin
   Lakes: Qinghai Lake, China's largest salt lake with an area of 4,583 square kilometers; Gyaring and Ngoring Lakes, two adjacent fresh water lakes; many smaller lakes, salt lakes, and marshes .

 Tourist Attractions: Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tashilhunpo Temple in Shigatse, Mt. Everest in Tinggri peaks; the southern valleys between the Gangdise and the Himalayas as Tibetan principal farming and pastoral lands; in the east, a region of parallel mountains and valleys, which are the northern half of the Hengduan Ranges
Mountains: the Himalayas in southern Tibet with an average elevation of 6,000 meters; the Kunlun and Tanggula Ranges in the north; Gangdise Range in the central southwest; the Hengduan Mountains right to the east of the Nyainqentanglha Range
Rivers: the Yarlung Zangbo River, which is the upper reach of the Brahmaputra River, winding its way through Tibet's southern valleys; the Nujiang, Lancang, and Jinsha rivers, which are respectively the upper reaches of the Salween, Mekong, and the Yangtze rivers, cutting through the Hengduan Mountains and entering Yunnan province
Lakes: over 1,000 lakes with the Namtso (1,920 square kilometers) being the second largest salt lake in China; other major lakes are the Siling Co, Gyaring Co, Ngangze Co, Tangra Yumco, and Yamdrok Yonmtse
